After the conference...
2nd PSGP Conference had come to an and – its topic („Psychotherapist's professional identity – sources, contexts, perspectives”) was by no means a coincidence. Each word in this topis has its significant value that found its reflection in speakers' presentations.
Identity...
This word allowed us to return to a thought that the concept of identity exists in context of two most important human relations: with oneself and with other people. This second context includes also culture and tradition, as Peter Schulthess argues, basing on primary sources of „soul healing” treatments. He reminded us of great variety of disciplines that psychotherapy draws upon – which is an evidence that psychotherapy is not solely a medical discipline.
Perspectives...
Head of Gestalt Therapy Institute, Katarzyna Węglorz-Makuch, talked about problems that both the Institute and PSGP has to cope with while struggling for gestalt therapists' right to commence psychotherapy on the same terms as members of other societies and associations. She presented our current legal situation and perspectives of psychotherapists' work in our country – which, of course, is connected with legal act on psychotherapy. Peter Schulthess commented on this and described the legal system in his home country, Switzerland.
Proffessor Lidia Cierpiałkowska shared some very thorough views on this topic.
Professional identity...
Interesting papers presented by Dorota Kożusznik-Solarska („Gestalt and training in business” and Daniel Bąk („Working with homo- and bisexual persons”) brought us some new therapeutic experiences.
Piotr Domaradzki's paper („Documenting psychotherapeutic work as an indicator of psychotherapist's professionalism”) with Peter Schulthess comments set a cornerstone for professional, cohesive pattern of documenting one's work.
This conference pointed to the fact that Gestalt psychotherapy widens its reach, keeps developing and proves efficient in working with human diversity, originality and confusion – that is in looking for our patients' identity.
Gestalt has knocked on business' door to ask for call for human; it allows to work with addicted people, with homo- and bisexual patients... it's area of operation widens.
So what is psychotherapist's – Gestalt psychotherapist's – identity? Papers and workshops presented at this conference have shown us that our identity is rich and diverse – and, what is most important – it is still open for new experiences and developments.
We came to an end of conference without a feeling of being satiated – this conference proved the richness of therapists' experiences and pointed to the fact that Gestalt has the potential to share, that it is both cohesive and diverse in its structures and forms. We felt the need to meet and confer more often.
We hope that the 3rd conference would be a next step towards our common development.
